The minimum amount of signal required for a Digital TV picture is 45uV, (micro volts) & the maximum amount is 65uV. The recommended level being 55uV.

Digital TV signal works very differently from the old analogue ones. As the graph on the left illustrates. Whereas analogue signals reduce gradually, (blue line), and the picture quality reduced accordingly, on a Digital broadcast when the signal strength drops to below a certain level you get no picture at all (purple line).  This is referred to as `Digital Cliff Edge`



If your aerial signal is hovering on or near this `cliff edge`it would not take much to upset the picture.



Things that can vary the signal you receive include the temperature outside, heavy rain and the output from the transmitter itself, as well as your own aerial system!
